Back in India, when I was a a little kid, I befriended a maid's daughter who was same age as mine. She was so fun!
After a few days I was shouted at for doing that and was told that I should not be playing with the ones "inferior" to me. I was very sad to lose a friend, I couldn't digest that "logic". But being a kid, I did not have a choice.
I couldn't look into the eyes of my friend after that. I knew she was wondering why I am not the same person anymore, but I couldn't tell her why. I felt like a criminal and victim at the same time.
That was when I decided that I would never tell such a thing to my kids in the future.
